• Cultural Tourism and Indiana City Service Attributes

In this study, we analyze the relationship between cultural tourism investment and resident quality of life in Indianapolis, Indiana. By using a 2012 Indianapolis Quality of Life survey, we were able to analyze residents’ perceptions of city service attributes. In this way, we can better understand the impact of cultural tourism on residents’ quality of life.

Residents’ perception of quality of life affects investment in cultural tourism

Cultural tourism in a local community can have significant positive and negative impacts on residents’ quality of life. Positive impacts are correlated with increased income and improved infrastructure; negative impacts are correlated with decreased quality of life and higher cost of living. Moreover, residents’ perception of the quality of life is affected by how much the local economy contributes to their quality of life.

In the study, residents’ perception of tourism impacts on quality of life was measured with five-point Likert scales. The scales accounted for how much respondents agreed or disagreed on each question, and thus the overall opinion of the community was determined by the average of the responses. The scales also included information on residents’ age, marital status, education level, and employment situation.

The results of this study show that cultural tourism can increase a city’s pride and attract more tourists and investment to its local economy. However, only a few studies have considered the impact of cultural tourism on the quality of life of residents. As a result, it is important to focus on the contextual characteristics of a city in order to increase its competitiveness and quality of life.
